                             INFORMATION

ABOUT THESE FILES:
All files in this archive are freeware, and must not be distributed for
profit. The flight and visual models are copyright of Jean-Jacques Schoepfer.
This aircraft is based on the Air Polynesie Islander by Jean-Jacques Schoepfer
(BN2-AP.ZIP) and incorporates an improved flight model by Rory Gillies (taken
from BN2_20_A.ZIP);
As supplied, the plane is shown as G-BPCA in the yellow green high visibility colour scheme of the Scottish Ambulance Service.

Recommended Add-on:
As installed, this aircraft will use the default twin engine fixed gear panel and Cessna sounds. For
a more realistic flight, the following is recommended:
Sounds:
Islander sound effects are available in MULTIENG.ZIP (from http:\\flightsim.com),
although these sound quite similar to the default Cessna sounds.
Panel:
There is an excellent Islander panel for FS98 by Rory Gillies, BN2_PAN.ZIP and
upgrade BN2_UPG.ZIP (from http:\\flightsim.com); you may wish to edit or remove
the aircraft registration on the panel!

Known errors:
The model flight is slightly unstable in autopilot! On G-BJOP, the lower section
of the main undercarriage struts are untextured, and therefore cant be painted. I tried to animate the aircraft using Aircraft Animator, but the cabin windows are linked to the props and rotate around the fuselage with them, which looks a bit odd!

ABOUT THE AIRCRAFT:
The Britten-Norman Islander was designed as a short take-off and landing aircraft,
and manufactured in the Isle of Wight, with the first flight in 1965. Loganair were
the first company to operate the Islander, taking delivery in late 1967. The
Defender is the military variant. An uprated version, the Trislander, has a longer
fuselage and a third engine mounted at the top of the vertical stabiliser.
Britten-Norman were acquired by Swiss company Pilatus in 1979, and the Islander is
now the best-selling commercial aircraft produced in Western Europe.
More information on the company is available from:

ABOUT THE SCOTTISH AMBULANCE SERVICE'S AIR AMBULANCE.

The Western Isles of Scotland do not have the hospital facilities of the two major Scottish cities, Glasgow and Edinburgh. Therefore it is sometimes necessary to bring residents of the Islands to the mainland for medical treatment. The Scottish Ambulance Service and other aircraft of Loganair are used for this purpose routinely, but also occasionally in an emergency when urgent medical care is required. As a result, the Islander's crew have to be prepared to fly in marginal weather, and at short notice. Although there have been casualties over the years, the general safety record is excellent. When on an 'urgent' flight, the ambulance has priority over the largest aircraft, even 747s! Nurses at the Southern General Hospital at Glasgow used to accompany the aircraft, and for this they received special training and were awarded 'wings' after they had made a number of flights. Obviously, they shared the risks undertaken by aircrew, and at least one nurse lost her life in an accident. Nowadays, however, paramedics and SAS staff travel on the aircraft.
